Abba, the Swedish pop legends have received the Swedish equivalent of a knighthood. Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog, and Benny Andersson were named Commanders of the First Class in the Royal Order of Vasa during a ceremony held at the royal palace in Stockholm on Friday.

King Carl XVI Gustaf presided over the ceremony, an occasion which was rare given the group all appearing in public together. The honor was bestowed upon them in recognition of their “very outstanding efforts in Swedish and international music life.”

In 2022, The Royal Order of Vasa was revived and ABBA are among the first Swedes to receive this prestigious honor in over 50 years. Candidates were nominated by both the general public and the Swedish government. The final selections were made by King Carl XVI Gustaf himself.
